The following is a discussion on the merits of dowsing and recommended procedures to follow while dowsing during a paranormal investigation or ghost hunt.

Dowsing has been practiced for hundreds of years and has been used for many reasons. Dowsing has generally been used to find underground water, locating unmarked graves, and most recently in ghost research.

Several studies have been conducted to determine the validity of dowsing. The studies have not conclusively determined if dowsing is anything more than hocus-pocus or if it is a viable scientific investigation method. Many well drillers will hire a dowser to locate the best location to drill a well. The dowser is often successful in finding a strong flow of underground water.

Dowsing appears to work very well for some individuals and hardly at all for others. Much of this we believe has to do with the dowser's concentration level while searching. It is important to keep your mind clear of any outside interference when concentrating on the task at hand.

Our own personal experiences with using dowsing rods to help locate an area with spirit activityhave been very successful at times. Many times we have been able to gather other corroborating evidence to back up what the dowsing rods were indicating.

We have used dowsing rods to locate paranormal activity both at indoor and outdoor locations with equal amounts of success. Concentration appears to be the key ingredient for success. On the occasions when we were preoccupied with other thoughts we had very little success, on the other hand; when we were focused on the task at hand we usually had success.

It is important to remember that dowsing is just one of the methods that can be used to locate paranormal activity. The use of EMF meters should also be considered as well as using your own intuition and common sense.

We believe that the inclusion of dowsing with your other investigative techniques can be quite useful. Any method that leads you to find evidence of the spirit activity you are searching for should be included in your investigation.

The following is a list of dowsing suggestions you may wish to use during your investigation.
Be sure to concentrate on what you are attempting to find and keep your mind clear of any negative thoughts.
Hold the "L" shaped dowsing rods in your fingers or in the palm of your hands; whichever is more comfortable for you. Either method is fine as long as the rods can spin completely around in a circle without touching any other body parts.
Place your elbows near your side and extend your lower arms out in front of you. Try to keep the rods level or pointed slightly towards the ground to diminish the effects of any wind that may be present.
While holding the rods walk the area to be investigated and follow the direction the rods point. The crossing of the rods often indicates a positive confirmation. Sometimes one or both of the rods will spin circles in either a clock-wise or counter clock-wise direction.
If a positive condition is found you should look for confirmation from your other equipment you are using; this could include EMF meters and thermometers. Now is also a good time to take photographs of the area where the positive confirmation was found.
